DITA Subject Scheme

The DITA subject scheme map, perhaps one of the least-understood and most under-utilized aspects of the DITA standard, enables DITA architects to create controlled values; hierarchies of controlled values; and taxonomies. We’ll walk through how subject scheme maps work, and then look at three innovative ways that they have been used to deliver enhanced user and content developer experience. The three case studies include:

  • How subjectScheme-aware processors can use a subjectScheme map to greatly simplify conditional processing.
  • How a delivery application uses a taxonomy defined through a subjectScheme map to produce enhanced search results and then DITA-to-voice.
  • How the DITA TC used a subjectScheme map and a review application (Mekon’s DITAweb) to enable reviewers to quickly identify changes associated with specific DITA 1.3 proposals.
